Matthijs van Heijningen's career as a commercial director and filmmaker spans more than two decades, with a strong presence in international markets through the American company MJZ in the US, the UK, France and Germany. Over these 20 years, he garnered all major advertising awards, including the prestigious Grand Prix at Cannes in 2012 for his Canal+ commercial. He has created numerous commercials for global brands such as Samsung, Coca-Cola, BMW, Heineken, Canal+, Pepsi, Adidas, YouTube, Nike, Volkswagen, and PlayStation, to name a few. In 2017, his commercial for Kia was voted the best advertisement at the American Super Bowl. In 2011, his first Hollywood feature for Universal, The Thing was released. In 2020, van Heijningen directed The Forgotten Battle, which premiered on Netflix in 2021 and garnered over 70 million views, topping international charts for several weeks. In 2023 he partly directed and produced the award winnings series The Jewisch Council.
